Ramblings, Various.
My toe is better. However, my doctor comes in and is like, "Let me try to do this without anesthestic," AND PROCEEDED TO DO SO. >:0!!! And THEN he says, "Hmmm, I need to do more, I'm going to numb you up now." -.-! I have to go back in 3 weeks to complete the process. Oh joy.

So there's this guy who wants to go out with me. I don't know why he does - he's obviously mental as I am ridiculously boring. He hadn't called for a few weeks so I thought I had succeeded in getting rid of him, but he's started calling again. -.- I don't know what to do. Whenever we're on the phone my end of the conversation is "Yes," "No," "Uh-huh" - I just don't have anything to say. I can't help but remember the great conversations my ex and I would have, where we'd be on the phone for hours. That's just not happening here, but I feel like I should try, you know? But maybe this guy isn't for me - or maybe I'm really not ready to date yet. Or maybe both. Thoughts?

I just finished re-reading all 5 HP books again. After finishing OotP, I have a couple of questions. First of all, why would anyone expect H/Hr to happen in canon after reading OotP? I'm not trying to be rude or start a ship war, I honestly am curious and don't get it. Let me explain. The part where Hermione explains Cho's feelings to Harry? I can't see two people who had any sort of romantic interest in one another being able to discuss the details of another relationship. Contrast that to Ron's and Hermione's reactions to one another when Hermione says she's writing to Viktor - Ron freaks out and Hermione gets a bit defensive. So please - I'm not trying to be all OMG R/HR!!1!!! here, I really do want to know if I just interpret things different from other people or what.

Also, I need a nice British-type person to please explain what 'Wotcher!' means. It's obviously some sort of slang greeting, but I really want to know what the heck it means. Can anyone explain?

There's supposed to be an ice storm tonight - I expect to fall and break a few bones tomorrow. -.-
I feel: blahblah

*dons shipper hat*

An H/Hr interpretation of Hermione's fabulous reaction to Cho is that it's a sign of her devotion to Harry - she wants him to be happy so badly that she'll sacrifice what she wants.

Of course, what's more important is the way she says these things to him. In that letter writing scene, and in others where she's talking about Cho, her comments are terse, matter of fact, and "businesslike" - she's not exactly being kind and gentle here. She's annoyed with Ron, and with Harry, for being thick, in spite of herself. She's envious of his feelings for Cho and wants him to get it over with so she doesn't have to hear it anymore. She's covering hurt feelings. She's the unrequited third wheel in Harry/Cho.

My favorite part is her description of Cho's feelings, because with a few name and phrase exchanges, it's eerie how well that long, well-thought out speech fits Hermione in a Hr-->H world.

And then there's the fact that Cho is repeatedly jealous of Harry's friendship with Hermione, making her the third person in canon to believe there's something going on between them. *g*

It really is a matter of interpretation when it comes to Hermione. JKR writes it so that it fits whatever beliefs each reader comes in with exceedingly well.

Fair enough. I don't agree, of course, but this at least helps me to understand your POV. Thanks!

*Nods* I think interpretation is a huge part of it. I don't see H/Hr at all in canon and have a hard time following some of the arguments I've seen for it but I know a lot of people DO see it so ... chalk it up to intepretation. *grins*

Oh I should also add that I think some folks just prefer H/Hr for various reasons other than canon, personal preferences and all of that.

Btw, good luck with the ice storm.

I think it is mostly personal preference - that seems to be the consensus.

Honestly? I'm not a canon shipper, in any way. JKR will do as she likes. I have ships I like to read in fanfic, though, so for that I'm all about the H/Hr. And for most PPers, who assumed that OotP would have an overt R/Hr romance, OotP was a fairly pleasant surprise. (Note that much H/Hr fic is post-Hogwarts and has a background of a failed R/Hr relationship.)

Herein, a very general statement: I think that part of the H/Hr vs. R/Hr thing that seems to frustrate the Good Shippers is that half of the PPers don't actually care what JKR says or what happens in canon; they just like H/Hr better. And for someone who is a real canon shipper, for whom half the reason to like a ship is because it will happen in canon, this stance has gone beyond perplexing to downright irritating.

Other than that, what zorb said.
lizardlaugh on January 11th, 2005 06:04 am (UTC)
I agree with both you and zorb here.

I am a trio shipper as a primary, and if I just *had* to choose one trio ship it'd be Harry/Ron. I can see the canon interpretations for both H/Hr and R/Hr. I do happen to think there is more overt R/Hr than H/Hr, but JKR is so damn sneaky, I wouldn't place any money on either.

In the end, yeah, H/Hr is a ship where you do see a lot of shippers say 'I don't really care about canon, I just like it'. I pretty much only read H/Hr if it is post-Hogwarts anyway, so canon doesn't really enter in to why I ship it.

Thanks for your input, too. I have totally gotten into the trio thing in the past 6 months or so, but I've been a Harry/Ron shipper from the beginning. *grins* And a R/Hr shipper - I suppose I should've been a trio shipper from the beginning, hmm?
Vicki: You'll get the wand!hermorrine on January 11th, 2005 07:11 pm (UTC)
Ah, thank you! This makes a lot of sense to me because I am totally a canon shipper in this respect. H/Hr shippers don't irritate me personally - I think you know me well enough to know that I am not a fanatical shipper - but I was puzzled.

Someone else has commented that it means "Whatcha doing?" or "What's up?" - would you agree?

"Wotcher?" : Britain :: "Wassup?" : United States

Short for "wotcher doin'?" --> "whatcha doin'?" --> "what are you doing?"

That makes sense and is what I was leaning towards - I just want a British person to confirm.

It's really very simple, at least explaining why I could see the Hermione giving Harry advice scenes in OotP as H/Hr - I used to do that all the time when I was a teen with my crushes. By "that," I mean give them advice and analysis on their crushes, which were not me. I'd be all matter-of-fact, scientific, detached, but it kept me on the "inside" of what was going on with my crush, and if I could subtlety discourage, great. It also let me spend time with the guy I liked if I could be useful to him.

The way Hermione was with Harry in those scenes....I've never identified so strongly with her.

Anyway, that's one of my reasons. Who knows, maybe she likes them both at the moment and the rest is yet to come out in the wash. :D

I hope there won't be any pairing within the Trio, mostly because I want them to stay friends. However, if I had to pick a likely relationship, I'd pick Ron/Hermione. I've become much more of a Remus/Sirius and/or Remus/Snape shipper post-OotP, honestly. Well, as much of a 'shipper as I ever am, since I don't get annoyed when I see 'ships that contradict those pairings.

I recently re-read SS, and this one line popped out at me. It was the scene where Harry first sees Snape, and Harry got the idea that Snape could read minds. And then there's the scene in PoA, where Harry has a vision of Buckbeack flying free.

...Do you think Harry might have some minor Seeing abilities? *is currently rereading books to see what other odd ideas Harry has had*
