Let's play Hey, What's On Fire?
So I am smelling something burning, and as the heat has just kicked on I think it's the furnace but I'm not sure, so I tell my brother to come and look. He opens the dishwasher and smoke comes pouring out. A plastic spatula that was on the top rack fell off and melted against the bottom. He got out as much as he could, but there are still bits of plastic on the heating element, so chances are I will die from my dishwasher blowing up at some point in the future.

Really, could today get any better? Now I'm going to try to get maybe 6 hours of sleep while inhaling the lovely scent of burnt plastic. -.-
I feel: at my limit

I had a similar experience last week, although it was about 2am and I was not bright enough to think of checking for items at the bottom of the machine. I just propped the door open to let out the smoke and told my sister the dishwasher was broken.

Yeah...I felt really stupid later that day when she told me about the little Tupperware lid stuck at the bottom.

Hope you're feeling better soon :-)
