Among the things I never expected to say...
I really think it's non-stated canon that Harry is uncircumsized.

Is "non-stated canon" an oxymoron? Isn't it accepted fact that the vast majority of British males are uncircumsized? Am I crazy to find the idea of Harry circumsized jarring in a fic? Am I crazy for thinking about this more than 5 minutes?

I feel: contemplativecontemplative

What are you usually thinking about them?
wankersore on August 27th, 2003 04:29 pm (UTC)
i am actually really interested in learning about things like circumcision. i seem to recall making a post about foreskins on my old lj. :-? i have a few pages bookmarked about it. is that weird? hahaha, PROBABLY. i wish i could take a class on the history of circumcision. also masturbation. and underwear. :)

You remind me of myself so much sometimes. We should like, run off and go to college somewhere that they teach Sexuality and Education and Psychology of Sexuality and all that...

I won't ask why the fic mentioned that he was circumcized... but yeah. He likely isn't. Only in the US is it done routinely (or if you're Jewish; a fact I figured out myself after asking the Sunday School teacher how Pharaoh's daughter knew Moses was Jewish just by looking and subsequently getting in trouble for it).

Having read the awful thing, I'm going to guess it's due to Gary Stuism.

*ROLLS* Oh Nancy, I love you.
Faster, plebe! I do believe I have the vapours!slytherincesss on August 26th, 2003 09:26 pm (UTC)
No, you're not crazy. I've noted it in fics before, and was like Hmm.

I don't support routine infant circumcision in general, so I notice these things too.
Vickihermorrine on August 27th, 2003 04:33 pm (UTC)
I used to think circumcision was the One True Way. *coughs* Amazing how your perspective can change due to repeated exposure...

You know, I've never knowingly had sex with an uncirc'ed male; but I have a son, and he is NOT circumcised -- I just feel very strongly that if a boy were not meant to have a foreskin, it wouldn't be there in the first place. And, as I am neither Jewish nor Muslim, I have no religious considerations to take into account. Interestingly, there are actually movements in both religious communities to eliminate circumcision for religious reasons. A good resource for anti-circ info is NOCIRC.ORG.

And being a British male, you of course have firsthand experience...literally.

Isn't it funny the things you pick up when you're in a British-centered fandom?

In an attempt to save money, Petunia might have done it herself, just like she once tried to give Harry a haircut.....

Sorry for going so off-topic, but I just had to say that I LOVE YOUR ICON! Isn't that Plop? From "The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark?" My son loves that book. I have an owl icon that I use occasionally, too - this seems a good time, so I'll use it here.

Oh - I can go back on-topic here. My son is circumsized, but only because my husband INSISTED. I was against it, but for some reason, in my weakened-after-having-given-birth state, I allowed it to happen. So, I hope he won't have an issue with it someday. Living in the U.S., he probably won't, as it's still pretty common here. I do think it's rather a barbaric practice, though, and if I let myself think about it, I can get really honked off at myself for not fighting harder with hubby about it. Makes me happy to think that Harry is uncircumsized.

A whole world of no! If it was going to be done in the UK at all, then it would be done at birth. As Harry came to live with the Dursleys at the age of 1 year and 3 months, it is very unlikely Petunia would have had a say.

@ Morri - based on my experience, I am certain Harry is not circumcised.

circumcision
I doubt very much he would have been circumcised.
It has never been standard practice in the UK. I was talking about this to a maternity nurse last year, and apparently there was a temporary blip about 20 years ago, when the medical profession thought that perhaps having no foreskin would be more hygienic, but then they did research and discovered that there was no significant difference. So they don't bother with it now. In fact, there are pressure groups in the UK that are actually vehemently against it on the basis that it is a form of mutilation and should not be imposed on babies.

The only people I know who have been circumcised are Jewish or American. Harry Potter is extremely unlikely to have been circumcised IMHO.

Re: circumcision
*nods* I was fairly certain I was correct. I've even discussed this very issue with John, who knows the UK vs US quite well indeed in this area. I just couldn't get into that fic because my brain kept rejecting the idea of Harry being circumsized...
